Hunting 101

 

  • Get Hunter’s Safety – If you were born after December 31, 1965 it is required to obtain any hunting license  https://wildlife.utah.gov/hunting/hunter-education.html
  • Choose your hunt i.e., Big Game or Small Game
  • Choose your weapon – Rifle, Bow, Muzzle loader, or Shotgun
  • Practice at range to sight in and establish proficiency
  • Refer to appropriate proclamations on Utah DWR site for proper application and hunt dates – Then apply before the deadlines https://wildlife.utah.gov/hunting/hunting-regulation.html 
  • Wait for draw results and prepare for hunt dates
  • Pick an area that is legal for you hunt and boundaries – Be sure it is on public land BLM or Forest Service
  • Private land often is better hunting, but comes with a cost paid to the landowner – Prior arrangements must be made
  • Plan some scouting excursions to your chosen area to familiarize yourself and hopefully spot game
  • Wait for opening morning and good luck

 

Basic Equipment

  • Hunting Rifle Big Game – Best Starter is either .270 Win or 30-06
  • Scope – Start with basic variable power 
  • 12-gauge pump shotgun – Upland, Waterfowl, and Small Game
  • Good sharp buck knife
  • Field Dressing Kit – Rubber gloves and Game Bags
  • Waterproof hunting boots
  • Warm hunting clothes – Camo preferred, but not necessary
  • Good all-weather jacket
  • Hunting backpack – For extra gear, food and water
  • Light gloves – Good for navigating brush and trees
  • Binoculars – 10x42 Recommended
  • Hunter Orange – Must have vest and hat
  • Rangefinder – Optional, but necessary for long range shots 300+ yards
  • Spotting Scope – Optional 
  • Sidearm – Optional extra protection and grouse gun
